Heather Cox Richardson

Heather Cox Richardson is a historian, author, and one of America’s most prominent public voices on the relationship between history and contemporary politics. A professor of history at Boston College, she specializes in nineteenth-century American political and economic history, with particular expertise in the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, the Republican Party, and the evolution of American democracy.

Richardson is the author of several books, including How the South Won the Civil War, To Make Men Free: A History of the Republican Party, and the bestselling Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America. She is also the creator of Letters from an American, her widely read daily newsletter that places current events within their broader historical context and has made her one of the most influential historians writing for a general audience today. Through her scholarship and public writing, Richardson demonstrates how understanding the political struggles of the American past can illuminate the challenges facing democracy in the present.
